My Story

My name is Charlie and I've been baking cakes as a hobby since I was a child. I'm the type of person that loves to try new cakey delights and old favourites. Whenever I visit a new place my first port of call is to see if it has a local delicacy and try it (as long as it doesn't have nuts in it. I'm not a nut fan).

My love for baking changed after attending sugar craft and cake decorating courses, I realised I wanted to make cakes for a living and left my job to pursue my dream career. On the course I learnt how to make sugar flowers on wires, edible fondant flowers and sugar paste figures, as well as learning piping techniques, how to do patchwork decorations and how to design beautiful cakes. Since then I've continued to improve my skills and techniques.

Who knew there was more to cake than just the sponge with a layer of buttercream, lol.

I started out baking from home for my friends and family, building up my reputation and customer base through word of mouth. After a year of working from home I thought the next step was markets, mainly specialist markets that come in to town 2-3 times a years. Our favourite is the Chic Vintique market its the home for all things vintage and has a lovely atmosphere.

In November 2014, Chintzy Cakes became one of the first businesses to open in the Stockton on Tees Enterprise Arcade. A year later I opened my own shop and tearoom where I sold my day-to-day cakes - like Victoria sponge, brownies, cupcakes and scones - and took orders for special occasion cakes. Unfortunately we have had to let the shop go due to the cost of running it. It was a great experience and hopefully in the future we will be able to try again with more knowledge in owning a shop and what pitfalls to look out for.

Our plans for the coming years are to attend as many markets as we can. Over the past couple of months we have been visiting markets all over the north east to see if we could be part of them. I will be adding all the markets we are attending on the Home Page.
